Math Goals and Expected Outcomes
The Investigations Math Program and the WCSU Problem Solving Activities are the core of the first grade math program. The math program is designed to provide a balance of mathematical concepts, problem solving skills, and computation practice. Highlights of the first grade math program are:
· A problem-solving approach that uses everyday situations
· Partner and small group activities that promote cooperative learning
· Concepts and skills introduced and reviewed throughout the year, promoting retention through a variety of exposures
· Opportunities for discussion and communicating mathematically
· Frequent practice using games
· A hands-on approach using physical models, such as pattern blocks, to represent concepts
· Opportunities for home involvement
